Paint Correction

Will Paint Correction Remove My Scratches?

By Andru Wilson

Scratches on your car or truck can be one of the most frustrating things to live with. From a rogue rock on the highway, bad washing techniques, or even just a minor bump in the parking lot, damage to the exterior of your vehicle can make it look like it's seen better days in no time!

Fortunately, scratches can often be removed, or at least significantly improved, with paint correction -- a professional process to restore the exterior of your vehicle to its former glory!

However, that doesn't mean every scratch can be treated the same way, and you shouldn't expect any miracles before going ahead with paint correction.

How Deep Is Your Scratch? (The Fingernail Test)

The simplest way to gauge how deep a scratch is will be to perform the fingernail test. Simply take your fingernail and run it over the scratch carefully:

  • No feeling at all -- It's most likely a defect that can be removed at the surface level with ease.
  • Slight catching -- You're likely dealing with a scratch in the clear coat that should be removed.
  • Drags hard -- It's likely going through your paint and may only be improved by paint correction, not entirely removed.
  • See primer, white marks, or bare metal -- This will need touch-up paint, not paint correction.

What Can Be Fixed With Paint Correction

Light Surface Scratches

Sometimes scratches are caused by light contact with objects or poor washing and drying techniques. This type of defect can usually be removed after just one stage of polishing!

Swirl Marks

Swirls often look like a spider web of scratches and are most visible in direct sunlight. They can occur from automatic car washes, a dirty wash mitt, or improper towel drying. Paint correction can remove or significantly improve these defects, especially with two stages of polishing.

Water Spots & Etching

Water stains left behind from hard water, birds, or tree sap can sometimes make it seem like there are scratches in the clear coat. If caught in time, paint correction can improve this type of defect!

Oxidation & Fading

Once clear coats start breaking down, fading, and chalking from UV exposure, it leaves behind a layer on the surface. Paint correction removes this and brings back depth in the color.

Random Deep Marring

Bumps from other vehicles or a rogue shopping cart may seem like severe scratches. However, if the paint is still intact, chances are the damage is only in the clear coat. Paint correction can make a major improvement in these cases!

What Paint Correction Can't Do

There are things that paint correction can't do, so keep your expectations realistic. It can't repair or correct:

  • Scratches that go down to the primer or metal
  • Missing paint or rock chips
  • Dents and body damage
  • Deep gashes that require repainting
  • Areas where the clear coat has already worn too thin

You'll need auto body repair in those cases instead.

The Paint Correction Process

Paint correction is a multi-step process. Here's an overview:

  • Proper wash and decontamination
  • Inspection under proper lighting (intense light shows swirl marks and scratches)
  • Test spot (determines the best method and safest process)
  • Panel-by-panel machine polishing and refinement
  • Protection (paint should be sealed after correction with wax, sealant, or ceramic coating)

How Many Stages Do You Need?

One-Stage

For light scratches and swirl marks. Quick improvement for newer vehicles.

Two-Stage

Industry standard: compound first, then finishing polish. Best balance of results.

Multi-Stage

For extremely neglected paint or deeper scratches. Can take multiple days.

Will Paint Correction Remove All Scratches?

No detailer will remove 100% of scratches. If someone promises you that, they're not being honest. Paint correction removes defects by carefully leveling only a limited amount of clear coat (and there's a limit to how much clear coat exists).

Most light to moderate paint defects can be removed. Deep scratches may only be improved.

How Long Does Paint Correction Last?

Once scratches are removed, they are removed for good. However, new scratches can occur over time depending on how you wash the vehicle, whether protection is applied, driving conditions, and storage (indoor vs. outdoor). Most clients have ceramic coating or sealants applied after correction to extend results.

Should You Get Paint Correction?

Paint correction is a good idea if your paint has swirl marks or light scratches, the vehicle looks dull or hazy, you want to improve resale value, you are prepping for ceramic coating, or you want the vehicle to look its best again.

It's probably not a good idea if the scratches are too deep, the vehicle will be repainted soon, or the damage is mostly cosmetic and you are budget-sensitive. A professional opinion is always the best first step.
